Walking on Water: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone in the Midst of Fear

Today, we dive into the story of Jesus and Peter walking on water, a powerful example of stepping out of our comfort zone in the midst of fear. This story from the Gospels teaches us valuable lessons on trust, faith, and overcoming the fears that hold us back.

The Story of Walking on Water

Let us first recount the story from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 14:22-33). After Jesus fed the five thousand with just five loaves of bread and two fish, He went up on a mountainside to pray. In the meantime, His disciples were in a boat, battling against strong winds and waves.

As the night grew darker, Jesus appeared to the disciples, walking on water towards their boat. His presence initially frightened them, but Jesus reassured them with His words, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter, filled with a mixture of faith and doubt, responded, "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water." Jesus called Peter to step out of the boat and join Him. With eyes fixed on Jesus, Peter stepped out onto the water and began to walk towards Him.

However, as Peter took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. In his fear, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught Peter. Jesus lovingly rebuked Peter's lack of faith, and as they both got into the boat, the winds calmed.

Finding Relevance in the Story Today

The story of Jesus walking on water resonates deeply with us today. It serves as a reminder of the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones, overcoming our fears, and placing our trust in Jesus. Let us explore how this story can impact our lives today:

1. Stepping Out in Faith

Peter's willingness to step out of the boat and walk on water demonstrated his profound faith in Jesus. Like Peter, we are often called to step out of our comfort zones and trust that God will guide and sustain us. It may be pursuing a new career path, embarking on a mission trip, or sharing our faith with others. By trusting in Jesus and taking that first step, we open ourselves to experiencing His power and presence in miraculous ways.

2. Overcoming Fear

Fear can often hinder us from stepping out in faith and living out God's purpose for our lives. The disciples faced a raging storm, but it was Peter who chose to overcome his fear and walk towards Jesus. This story challenges us to confront our own fears and anxieties, knowing that with Jesus by our side, we can overcome any obstacle that stands in our way.

3. Keeping Our Eyes on Jesus

When Peter took his gaze off Jesus and focused on the storm, he began to sink. This serves as a powerful reminder that in the midst of life's challenges, our focus should always remain on Jesus. When we fix our eyes on Him, we are able to navigate the storms of life with confidence and faith. By centering our hearts and minds on Jesus, we find peace and assurance in His presence, even when the world around us is chaotic.

4. The Savior Who Saves

When Peter cried out, "Lord, save me!", Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him. This showcases the unfailing love, grace, and rescue that are available to us through Jesus. No matter how deep our fears or failures, Jesus is always ready to extend His hand of salvation and lift us up. This story reminds us of the limitless power and unwavering love of our Savior.
